Continuing her rapid return to the political spotlight, Hillary Clinton began her keynote speech at a fundraising luncheon for Annie's List on Friday with a few choice words for President Donald Trump and his decision to launch missiles at an air base in Syria last week.
"Syria has been a wicked problem for a very long time, and the images of innocent people, of parents, and especially of children, suffering in the aftermath of that most recent deadly gas attack, were more appalling than I certainly could put into words," she said at the Texas event. "As I said yesterday afternoon, it is essential that the world does more to deter [Syrian President Bashar Hafez al-Assad] from committing future murderous atrocities."
"But the action taken last night needs to be followed by a broader strategy to end Syria's civil war, and to eliminate ISIS's stronghold on both sides of the border," she continued. "So I hope this administration will move forward in a way that is both strategic and consistent with our values, and I also hope that they will recognize that we cannot in one breath speak of protecting Syria's babies and in the next, close America's doors to them."
The former Secretary of State's latter remarks were in reference to a statement Trump made prior to the airstrikes, in which he expressed horror over Assad's attack on innocent children.

"When you kill innocent children, innocent babies — babies, little babies — with a chemical gas that is so lethal, people were shocked to hear what gas it was, that crosses many, many lines," he said.

Meanwhile, Trump has repeatedly advocated for a refugee ban that would include people fleeing war in Syria — something Clinton implies is in direct contrast to his concern for these children. However, as previously reported, Clinton actually agrees with Trump's decision to take military action in Syria. During an event in New York last Thursday prior to the attack, she said, "I really believe that we should have and still should take out [Assad's] airfields and prevent him from being able to use them to bomb innocent people and drop sarin gas on them."
