“World Supermarket” – Yiwu Sees Trade Growth

The 23rd China Yiwu International Commodities Fair (Yiwu Fair) has came to an end for a few months, with more deals signed than the 31st China International Hardware Fair. Over 2,200 companies from 15 countries and regions, including several big shots such as Alibaba Group and Amazon, attended this year’s fair in Yiwu City, Zhejiang Province.

The reason why this fair is only held in Yiwu is that it is known as the “World Supermarket” for its wholesale goods. Yiwu City’s Customs said on Wednesday, “This city saw steady growth in the trade last year”. Official data showed the city achieved a total trade volume of CNY211.3 billion (USD32.6 billion) from January to December, up by 4.4%, with exports amounting to CNY208.1 billion, up by 4.1%, and imports reaching CNY3.2 billion, up by 34.3%.

Yiwu exports more than 20,000 types of Christmas items to over 100 countries and regions every year, accounting for 60% of the world’s market share. A Chinese merchant at Yiwu Fair told Xinhua News Agency that her company alone sold 200,000 Christmas trees to the Euramerican countries, such as the United States, Argentina, Italy and Colombia last year.

According to Yiwu City’s Customs, this city exported CNY1.4 billion Christmas goods to these countries, such as Chile, the United States, the Philippines, Brazil and India from January to December.

Belt and Road countries have also become important export destinations, leading many Chinese merchants to add Arabic specifications to their products, in addition to Chinese and English versions. The Customs said India was the largest importer, with trade volume exceeding CNY13 billion, while Hungary and Angola registered the highest year-on-year growth of 232% and 101% respectively.
