We are
saddened by the loss of Sen. John Glenn, the first American to orbit Earth. A
true American hero. Godspeed, John Glenn, died on December 8, 2016 at the age
of 95.

John
Glenn, who earned worldwide acclaim by orbiting the Earth in 1962 and then
parlayed his achievements into a notable career in the U.S. Senate, has died.
Although
on February 20, 1962, he became the first American to orbit the earth, he was
the third American in space. In 1962, he completed three orbits around the
planet aboard the space capsule “Friendship 7.”
He
resigned NASA in 1964, and was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1974, where he
represented the great state of Ohio for 25 years. He returned to space in 1998
at the age of 77, making him the oldest person to fly in space.
President Barack Obama awarded him the
Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012.

“The first
American to orbit the Earth, John Glenn became a hero in every sense of the
word, but he didn’t stop there serving his country. As a senator, he found new
ways to make a difference. And on his second trip into space at age 77, he
defied the odds once again,” Obama said at the ceremony.
The events
of John Glenn’s life, and his footprint on history, are chronicled in countless
books and beyond. The Friendship 7 capsule is in the Smithsonian, his papers
and memorabilia are archived at Ohio State, and his life with Annie — and much
more — are displayed at the Glenn Historic Site in New Concord.
NASA Administrator
Charlie Bolden remembers, “Senator Glenn’s legacy is one of risk and
accomplishment, of history created and duty to country carried out under great
pressure with the whole world watching.”
